Toyota Chinook Brake Booster and Master Cylinder Upgrade 1978/1984

Turns out the pattern for brake boosters didn’t change much over the years. You can swap in a RWD 1984 Toyota Pickup

CARDONE 532080 – Brake Booster (4 Stud vs stock 2 stud) RWD; Base Model; 3/4 (Ton)
QUALITY-BUILT NM51894 (4 Stud vs stock 2 stud) RWD; w/ 3/4 Ton Chassis; w/ Front Disc brakes

Both cost less than $160 from rock auto and replaced the rusty and very old original booster. I had replaced the master a few months ago, and notices that the booster may not have actually been holding a vacuum. I cut new paper gaskets by hand using the old crusty ones i pulled from the firewall, and the master cylinder. Also, I had to bend the brake lines a bit from the proportioning valve to sit about an inch or two further back for this master cylinder. The Bracket for the proportioning valve also had to be squeezed with some vice grips, because the hole distance was off by a few mm coming from the 2 stud to the 4 stud. It looks great though!

Also! Remember to measure the pushrod and master cylinder you pulled and look at the offset for the adjustable pushrod on your brake booster. The brake booster pushrod will definitely need adjustment since they are usually backed way too far out from the factory. Also, properly bench bleeding your master cylinder with Brake Fluid before you swap it in!

I’m really happy with how well this dropped in. Took me less than an hour to swap out!
